Rain, heat and harvest: Mecca's water seasons
Mecca has a hot arid climate with an average of about 3.05 inches of rain a year and a record high of 126 degrees. In summer, air conditioners work for long hours and condensate lines clog or overflow. A damp patch on a ceiling or closet wall in July is often the first sign, so check the line before the stain grows.
Harvest brings up to 5,000 seasonal farmworkers to the area, and about 49 percent of residents work in agriculture. Busy homes run washers, water heaters and sinks harder, which adds wear to hoses and fittings. Owners and landlords can replace old washing machine hoses ahead of the season and show tenants where the shutoff valves are.
| Season | Typical problem | First move |
|---|---|---|
| Summer heat | Air conditioner condensate overflow and strained appliances | Check the drain line and call if a ceiling or wall is wet. |
| Rare storm | Roof leaks and runoff at doors and garages | Move items up, avoid standing water and call us. |
| Harvest months | Heavy plumbing use in crowded homes | Replace worn hoses and know the main valve. |
| Quiet months | Slow leaks that nobody notices | Look under sinks and behind appliances monthly. |
Storms the east valley still remembers
From 1905 to 1907, Colorado River floodwater poured into the Salton Sink and created the Salton Sea. It came close to Mecca but never reached it. A hurricane in 1976 and floods in the 1980s later slowed the progress of the eastern valley, a reminder that low ground collects water.
In October 2026, remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel left streets in nearby North Shore buried in mud. North Shore sits close to Mecca but is not on our listed coverage, so call with the address and we say plainly whether we can help. For your own address, check the FEMA Flood Map Service Center rather than guessing.
When water is spreading in Mecca
Mecca is about 15 miles southeast of our Coachella office, roughly 20 minutes on our estimate along the State Route 86 and Highway 111 corridor. That distance is why calling early matters, and we do not promise an arrival window. We do offer same-day response when it is available.
Our line is staffed around the clock. In ZIP 92254, a flooded entryway after a storm usually calls for flood damage restoration, while a burst line under a sink needs emergency water removal first.
Coverage
ZIP 92254 is Mecca's one ZIP code and is served from Coachella.
Around the clock
Emergency dispatch is available around the clock, all week, including harvest weekends.
Permits
Mecca is unincorporated, so repair permits go through Riverside County Building and Safety.
Local landmarks
The Mecca-North Shore Community Library and the Mecca Fire Station are handy reference points for directions.
Farm country, canals and ground that holds water
Groundwater and Coachella Canal water turned this part of the Colorado Desert into farmland, and date palms have been farmed near Mecca since the late 1890s. That history means irrigation lines, ditches and wet fields are never far from a home. A broken irrigation line that runs against a wall is outside water, so keep out of it and call before you start cleaning.
Mecca has an elementary school but no public high school, and the Farmworker Service Center, the Mecca Fire Station and a Boys and Girls Club unit serve the community. If you cannot give a street number, naming one of these places helps the dispatcher place you. After the water is out, water damage cleanup handles damaged materials, and a leak that sat for days may also need mold remediation.
The nearest town with its own page is Thermal, and Indio is the larger city to the northwest. Each has different permit rules, since Thermal is also unincorporated and Indio is a city.
If Water Is Still Spreading in Mecca
Work through this list while the crew is on the way, and stop if any step looks unsafe.
Find the valve
Close the fixture valve or the main valve. For a broken irrigation line, shut the line's own valve as well.
Mind the electrics
Turn off power to wet rooms only if you can reach the panel on dry ground. Otherwise stay out and call the utility.
Raise belongings
Lift boxes, bedding and appliances off the floor and open closet doors so air can move.
Stay out of dirty water
Storm runoff, sewage and irrigation overflow can carry contamination, so keep children and pets away.
Call us any hour
Give us the cross street or nearest landmark, and we start planning the first steps with you.
The standard behind the drying
For a home in Mecca, ask whether the crew works to ANSI/IICRC S500, the published standard for water damage restoration, and how readings will show that the walls and slab have dried, since dry desert air can make a floor feel dry before it is.

Do you cover every ZIP code in Mecca?
Mecca has one ZIP code, 92254, and we serve it. It covers the community on the north shore of the Salton Sea, including homes near the library and fire station. If you are in North Shore or along the Salton Sea shoreline, call and we confirm by address.
Is emergency water removal available in Mecca?
Yes. The line is answered all day and all night. A dispatcher explains the scope and how pricing is set before anything begins, and same-day visits happen when we have a crew free.
Do you serve North Shore and the Salton Sea area?
Those places are close to Mecca but are not on our listed coverage. Call with the address and we tell you plainly whether we can take the job.
Is Mecca too far for same-day help?
Mecca is about 15 miles from our Coachella office, roughly 20 minutes on our estimate. A window is not something we can promise, yet we try for same-day help and tell you honestly what to expect.
Does a hot, dry climate mean less mold after a leak?
No. Mold needs moisture, and a leak that stays wet in a wall or closet can support it even in the desert. Fix the source, dry the area quickly, and see our page on mold remediation if wet material was left in place.
Who handles repair permits in Mecca?
Mecca is unincorporated, so permit questions go to Riverside County Building and Safety. The county can tell you what a particular repair needs before you begin.
